The Ascension Dimension | Second Edition

CD, Stereo Deluxe/Lowlands

Tekst: Koen Mariën

Publicatiedatum: 29 januari 2001

This low-priced double cd on Stereo Deluxe is a nice introduction to the British Ascencion label. Not less than twenty-two tracks, with artists like The Funky Lowlives, Midnight Creeperz and Columba Carina, but also a few special appearances by the likes of Glenn Underground, Mark De Clive Lowe and La Cienda Honduras. On the first cd The Funky Lowlives kick off with their top track 'Wicked World', setting the mood with excellent Afrobeat. Lots of downtempo and dubby sounds, lounge music and jazzy tracks are to follow, with highlights by MB ('Woody Green') and Minimal Boy ('Force of Evolution'), but also quite a few endless and cheesy tracks, which spoils the overall listening pleasure of the first cd. Luckily the second cd has more to offer. The track selection emphasises on the dubby side of things, starting off with a dub version of 'Wicked World' and continuing with great tracks by Columbia Carina ('Kasper's Flow'), Sepia ('Freeway Exile') and even pure old skool dub with Sound Foundation ('Dub Racer'). Halfway through the dub sound makes way for more jazzy and funky stuff, with a gem like the the funky free jam '5am' by East Village Headz. But also the second cd doesn't manage to keep up a high level from beginning to end. It's a good introduction to a lot of pretty unknown artists and there are nice things to be discovered on this double-pack, but I get the feeling that quantity was more important than quality.
