Now the classic mistake a lot of DJs tend to make is that they simply start to cane stuff like this for hours on end, a relentless wall of fast monochrome techno without contrast or suspense (check out Carl Craig's masterful The Workout for a lesson in the creation of a mix that seduces with the employment of diversity.) I thought I could dismiss The Advent on account of the use of his records in the typical Luke Slater, Billy Nasty or Johannes Heil set. On the strength of Sketched for Life this looming negligence would amount to something of a small disaster. For some reason The Advent reminds me of techno's equivalent of Bad Company in that they search for a purification of a certain strand of rave, their dark sound has a wide appeal and consequently is much copied, and one should enjoy their music in small doses. Amazingly enough in this age of interminable albums The Advent himself knows perfectly well how to dose his music for maximum impact; the eight tracks of Sketched for Life clock in at a perfect 38 minutes. Eight studies of The Advent-sound that thankfully makes no compromises towards the living room; this is purist techno from the Mills & Young school of thought: circular, Spartan but always packing a surprise or two in the form of lush melodies ('Link', for instance) or ingenious effects (for instance the weird fade-outs during the great 'Keep it Under'). The sound of our winter of discontent 2002/2003. Fade to Grey.
