My god (or should I say: my goth), there is gothic written all over this band. Not only have they got songtitles like 'Gothic Girl' and 'Graveland' and photos of them posing in front of a gothic church, the messiah-like frontman (always necessary for these kind of bands) calls himself "Gothicockgod" and the band claim to play Goth 'n' Roll. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland the band started playing music influenced by Iggy & The Stooges, Motšrhead and The Doors in the early nineties. They combine romantic and dark visions with Rock 'n' Roll to create Goth 'n' Roll. The band calls it the missing link between The Cult and Type-o-Negative. But I only hear a faster and more mainstream version of Type-o-Negative. Not in the least because the voice of singer Jyrki 69 resembles the voice of Peter Steele a lot. The closest they get to Goth 'n' Roll is in the last song '30'. They know the roots of gothic and doom very well and turn those influences into an easy-to-consume format. Sometimes The 69 Eyes even quote from those same roots: the phrase "give me something that I miss" from The Sisters Of Mercy's 'This Corrosion' is quoted in the opener 'Framed In Blood' and Joy Divisions 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' appears in the song 'Gothic Girl'. But that overexposure of gothic influences makes The 69 Eyes into some sort of a "bubblegum-gothic" and therefore maybe not that serious. Think of Him only less popular, Type-O-Negative only less lengthy and The Sisters Of Mercy only less serious. For people who are not familiar with gothic, 'Blessed Be' is a good and accessible introduction into this style of music. But the real fans of gothic should not lie awake in their coffins of The 69 Eyes.
