In psychedelic stoner rock there are 2 categories: the Deadheads and the
Beatle-freaks. The first category produces tracks that meander endlessly
through soundscapes of phased and wah-wah'd noodling. Extremely boring. The
second category is the interesting one. These are bands that try to
incorporate the pop music of the late sixties and early seventies in their
own material. Stoner godfathers Black Sabbath's own attempts at this did not
result in their best tracks, but bands like Cathedral, Masters Of Reality and
Trouble were more succesful. Terra Firma now can be added to that list.
Comparable in style and quality to Trouble, this is one of the best stoner
releases of the year so far. There's not only good riffs, beautiful melodies
and a thight rhythm section, but these are also put together in memorable,
well structured and varied songs. All 9 tracks are first rate, from the
straight forward 'Harms Way' to the lush 'Sway'.
That last track highlights a minor annoyance: singer Lord Chritus tries very
hard to sound like Ozzy while in that song he shows he's actually a much
better singer, who can also pull off a good Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull).
Unnecessary for a band with so much quality.
