Interesting. That's the first thing that comes to mind while listening to Teleform's Cosine F. Not "Oh this is good!" or "Damn this sucks!", or even "mediocre music". No. Teleform is from an other level. Or even an other planet. The sounds on this cd are perfect material for the following discussion: where is the point that sound can be called music, or where does music become only sound again. Sure, there are lots of definitions to be found on the internet, but Teleform is able to take an active part in the discussion, by releasing an album like Cosine F. 35 tracks without titles in 40 minutes, never knowing where one track ends and the other starts. The sounds themselves are anonymous pieces of digital noises and hisses, static and drones. No melody whatsoever; it only varies in volume and level of distortion. Beautiful or pretty? Definitely not. Ugly or boring? Again the answer is no. Cosine F is an interesting album, fascinating from start to finish. It's surrealistic, difficult, and manages to confront you with your own definition of music. References: there are none. Compared to Teleform, Autechre are traditional whimps, Oval makes easy listening, and The Third Eye Foundation is a lounge producer. How far can you stretch your limits?
