The Joy Of . . . was recorded in Louisville, Kentucky. That doesn't sound unfamiliar to me at all. OK, I've never been there, and honestly I haven't got the foggiest notion where to pinpoint it on the map. A friend of mine, though, must have said "Louisville, Kentucky" at least a thousand times in my company, because he seems to think all cool music comes from that place. It's that same friend who had to tell me The Joy Of . . . contains a song by the Boss. 'Anh Fahr' is TJO's interpretation of Springsteen's 'I'm On Fire.' Actually, when listening to it, it sounds pretty close to the original. I had to be told it was a cover, of which the original is not unfamiliar to me, but it seems so natural that I wouldn't have noticed it if the two versions were played back-to-back. And it's so wry to say that, out of the four tracks, this cover's the best song. The acoustic version of 'High Wire' (from her last album) is a pleasure to hear too, but the opening and closing songs could've been done without. 'If Your Youth is Green' opens with a squealing gate. The song isn't bad at all, but the tender melody is wrapped in a disturbing package of sober guitars and squeaking bleeps. The song should've focused more on the melody; now it's as if the tenderness loses the fight. The Joy Of . . . closes with 'All Jewels Redux,' a soundscape that brings to mind images of space and astronauts, uhm, with cello in the background. Material for completing your collection; otherwise, not obligatory. Or maybe only for Bruce, heee heee heheheee.
