Cheap deal? Although the second Sykosonics demo was recorded with a smaller group setting, a minimal budget, and in a simple studio with a minimum of overdubs, it actually doesn't sound cheap at all. The three songs on this demo are simply great guitar pop treasures.
Influenced by bands such as the Breeders, the Posies, and Pavement, Sykosonics bring poppy tunes with a positive vibe. In this sense it's easy to compare Sykosonics with fellow Amsterdam-based, three-member band Caesar, but the input of guitarist/singer/songwriter Maria Romijn, together with Joost Kuijer on bass and Sander van Veen on drums, does bring a defining personal sound to their band.
Cheap Deal starts with a fine guitar- and drums-driven intro that sets the happy tone. The musical mood on the demo continuously swings between groovy, with melodic vocals, and loud rocking dissipations. But it's a short rush; too bad it's over after almost ten minutes.
This demo is supposed to be a preview of what to expect when Sykosonics eventually release a full album in 2003. If they keep up with the Cheap Deal concept, the result will be just great — I'm sure about that.
The demo tracks are downloadable for free on their homepage.
