The bad news is yes, there are too many mix cds around these days. The good news is that sometimes something special comes around. Like 'The Sound of the Second Season', an impression of Sven Väths residencies in Ibiza last summer. The first cd, 'Night', represents a night out with the German techno and trance God in club Amnesia. 'Day', cd number two, is an afternoon of chilling in the sun at the Calla Llonga Afterhour Club. Yep, a concept album, but it actually works and makes this release stand out of the tons of new mix cd releases. The first disc has everything you can expect from Väth: very solid and dark techno, pure energy with always that touch of trance over it. German craftmenship, with the help of artists like Surgeon, Secret Cinema, Alter Ego, Dj Rush and Marco Carola. Väth ends the first mix in style with the beautiful 'Diabla' by Funk D'Void. But it's actually the second cd that deserves your attention, because it brings the kind of music that's usually not on Sven Väth mix cd's. Beautiful classics like 'The Scenic Route' from Ian Pooleys release on Transmat, dubby minimal techno from the occasional duo Richie Hawtin and Steve Bug, work from the maestro himself with his phenomenal remix of Sunpeoples 'Check Your Buddha' and even downtempo electro (Two Lone Swordsmen - 'Solo Strike'). Only downer is the extremely cheesy voice of Rob Taylor in 'Hey Little Girl' by Matthias Schaffhäuser, or maybe it's just the fact that you have to endure it for over seven minutes. Again Väth ends in style, this time with the beautifully weird 'Windowlicker' from Aphex Twin. A nice release that won't only please the die hard Sven Väth fans.
