In the year 2002, it is very hard to get some nice, uncut britpop. Some dealers just quit and others started selling something else. To be exact: When Blur released The Great Escape, a commercial disaster, britpop wasn't really in demand anymore. One of the better dealers came from Holland, surprisingly. The name was Supersub, and with Window Shopping and Fly Pilot Fly they really demonstrated international potential. But as sad things go, irresistible songs like Out On The Scene, Dragging Me Down, and Told You So got lost in the big britpopbulb. Well, alternative radio stations played them endlessly, but real success didn't occur. The incomprehension led to disaster. They decided to leave their major label Virgin, and some band members, including JB Meyers, left the band. Was Supersub about to become an unused substitute? You might guess so, but actually you're reading a review of their new album Mighty Baby. Felix Maginn and Marc Driessen stayed on and three new members joined. And they're dealing britpop again!
Mighty Baby starts off with Easy To Run, the obvious first single, and includes short lyrical lines, catchy melodies, and an easy-to-remember chorus with additional trumpet. Oh yes, it's good to hear them clichés again by a band that's able to write the classic pop song. Less interesting are the elementary-school lyrics that pop up now and then, like "I wish I could tell you / How much I have missed you / How often I've kissed you." But they're professional enough to make it up with the album's highlight Divine Right. Divine indeed, especially the string section and the additional chorus. The theme song of the album must be Everything's Alright, because Supersub refuses to take notice of any possible complexity on Mighty Baby. Because that's what britpop is all about. The dealer is back again, on the street corner with a big smile on his face.
