'Come Pick Me Up' is the new CD by Superchunk! I bet not many people are very excited now reading this and even fewer people will actually jump up from their computers and run to the stores to pick up the record (although the title strongly suggests it). My question would be: why? Superchunk is largely ignored in Europe, but widely adored in the States, and it has been like that for years. Back in the beginning of the nineties Superchunk temporarily was the darling of the European press but the last few years their music has been put off as irrelevant. But actually, since their start about a decade ago, Superchunk has gotten better and better with every record they make. This new record is not as punk as they used to be, but it’s a lot niftier than before, and it definitely sounds very nineties. Not in a trip-hop kind of way, but just with some slight adoptions to their sound over the years. Superchunk can still rock the hell out of you but they can also calm down and come up with some powerful slow songs. The instruments too don’t sound as one-dimensional anymore as they did before; there are lots of cool guitar riffs but also plenty of keyboards on this record, but Mac McCaughan’s vocals sound as fragile and heartfelt as ever. The songs usually take a while to develop into your head but man, when they do you won’t get them out for a long time, they’ve got more hooks than bloody Rex Hunt’s entire fishing boat. This is by all means not a classic record or anything, but it’s just a very good one by one of those bands that have been around for a long time, though still showing improvement with every record they make. In a decade of one million powerpop bands, how many bands can say that?
