This Summer's most anticipated album for me personally had to be Sunny Day Real Estate's fourth album 'The Rising Tide'. The excitement that I felt when I actually got a hold of it is hard to describe, as for the magic that surrounds the music of this Seattle-based band. Whenever someone asks me what my all-time favorite album is, I always reply Sunny Day's second LP (better known as the 'Pink Album'). Its beautiful compositions, great dynamics and the emotional, high-pitched vocals by Jeremy Enighk make me feel so vulnerable, yet secure and self-confident. This is it, baby! The following album 'How It Feels To Be Something On' was hailed by rock critics as the best thing to come out since Radiohead's 'OK Computer' (yes, even the Dutch media could not turn away from its splendor). But for some reason this band can't seem to make themselves be heard to a wider audience, especially here in the Netherlands. Maybe, for once, they should come over for a tour in support of the new release, which could open a whole new audience for the band. 'The Rising Tide' definitely has the ambition in doing so, with Enighk's vocals carrying the songs more than ever. One can also notice the accessibility of this album by the more simple approach to the songwriting, which is however a negative note on this album. Sunny Day used to incorporate intellectual, technical song-craftsmanship, but in such a way that it didn't bother the song as a whole. One could listen to their songs and not notice a thing, but with a closer listen you could be amazed by the profound technical abilities of these musicians. But even so, this latest record has something else that enriches the music, something else that creates magic. I'm sorry but I can't really point out what that is at this moment. Sunny Day Real Estate grows on you, that's for sure. Let it be a warning for you music-loving pioneers: This is not instant music, which hooks you by the first couple of listens! Give it a try and hopefully you'll be captured by its beauty.
