There are only a few bands that can make the same music they did more than ten years ago, and still sound original and relevant. Suicidal Tendencies are one of those bands. Where the predecessor from 'Free Your Soul And Save My Mind', 'Freedumb', was more hardcore minded, 'Free Your Soul...' is an original melting from the two styles in which S.T. excel: the groovy funk metal we also know from one of Mike Muir's other bands Infectious Grooves, and the hardcore S.T. is known for. Funky songs like the excellent 'Su Casa es Mi Casa' and the title track take turns with harder songs like the first song 'Self Destruct' and 'Start Your Brain'. They also prove they haven't lost their sense of humour in songs like 'Pop Songs' ("I hate Puff Daddy and his friend the dead fatty. And I hate the Grateful Dead, but I'll be glad when the rest of them are dead") and the socially minded spoken-word which divides this album. Suicidal Tendencies show with this album that they can easily compete with new funk metal- and crossover-bands. The Suicidal Tendencies are definitely back and here to stay!
