Student Rick | Soundtrack For A Generation
The softest band ever to be released on Victory.

Victory Records has just gained a new band full of passion. I'm talking about four guys from Indiana who formed a band called Student Rick. Student Rick is one of those bands who play extremely emotional music. I could be wrong but Student Rick plays the softest music ever to be released by the Victory label. The first few songs of their debut album 'Soundtrack For A Generation' made me think of these high school proms in the States which we all know from the movies. When the first two songs have passed the sensitive part of the human brain, some more aggressive sounds are coming through the speakers. Don't expect too much of a punk or hardcore style sound though. They still keep it pretty soft in a pop inflected way, with just a bit of distortion and more volume. The 13 songs on 'Soundtrack For A Generation' are about different parts of life. Lyrics are about being in love, braking up, losing friends and other stuff people have experienced in life. Despite of the fact that I'm not very enthusiastic about the album 'Soundtrack For A Generation', I have to admit that these guys now how to create a good emo-indie album. Very good voice skills and perfect handling of the instruments. I do like emotional music but what I miss in Student Rick's music is the screaming backing vocals like the band Thursday is doing on their album 'Full Collapse' or PN with 'Dreamwave Heroes'. There's one song called 'Meet You Halfway There' in which you can hear just a bit of a raised voice in the background. Too bad they didn't use that much more. Another example is the song 'South Of Blackford'. There is this really cool part in it, but after a few seconds they quit going on and another load of piano sounds are thrown all over you eardrums. If you like this kind of music more than I do, try and listen to Student Rick. Other bands which play the same emo to indie-style or more aggressive are Hunther Gatherer, Left At Yale, One Line Drawing (side-project of Far) and This Minor Tremble.
