When a band has a deal with the record label owned by Joe Lally, of Fugazi, and
their debut album has been produced by Steve Albini, one can have some fairly
high expectations about the band's quality.
The band in question is Stinking
Lizaveta, a Philadelphia-based instrumental rock outfit, and they do not
live up to the expectations. 'III' is their third album, as you might have
guessed, and the foundation of the music lies deeply in heavy and bluesy
stonerrock guitarriffs. That would have been alright if the riffs were
interesting (see Karma To Burn), but the endless process of putting riff
after riff doesn't work if the riff itself is boring. Only a few tracks
escape this trap by putting more melody and variety into the structure.
It is in these tracks one can hear that Stinking Lizaveta isn't talentless,
but three good songs in-between nine bad-to-mediocre ones doesn't make the
balance swing to the right side. The sloppy production - especially in the
drum mix - is not helping, either. Save your money for something better than this,
is my advice.
