Steakknife is a very multinational band. The five-piece harbors members of American, Italian, French and German origin and has its base in Germany. American singer Lee Hollis has already earned his stripes in the (German) punk-rock scene as being the former singer of The Spermbirds. With the second release of Steakknife you can hear the old punk roots of Lee (and maybe the rest of the band as well) embedded in Steakknifes music. Their punk brings you back in America of the early eighties where bands like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Religion and (later) Shelter used to reign the hardcore/punkscene. Not only does the quiverish voice of Lee brings back memories of Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys, but the use of the guitars and the prominent place for Hollis' lyrics resembles the way in which the music was made in these days. Only the lyrics are a little bit cornier and less politic as the ones of Jello Biafra (listen to 'My Dad's A Cop' and 'I Hope My Girlfriend Thinks I'm Cool'). In some other songs, like 'Smoke House', 'Heavy Daze' and 'Source Code', Steakknife adopts a more melodic kind of hardcore which reminded me of bands like Civ and Shelter. At the end you find that you have listened to a CD that took you on a punk/hardcore trip down memory lane. But it certainly has one foot in the present and never gives you a sad and melancholic feeling.
