Spoiler | Mud 'N' Glitter

Originality is overrated. Who needs it when there are such albums as
Spoiler's debut 'Mud 'N' Glitter?' With 80% muddy sludge rock cliches and 20%
retro-glam glitter, Spoiler fills the void left behind by 7Zuma7. In
fact,
Spoiler bassist Arjen Rienks played in that band for about 2 weeks. So
expect a bath of heavy grooves, topped off with plenty of wah-wah and
distortion. Another correspondence between the two bands is producer Pieter
"Pidah" Kloos, who gave 'Mud 'N' Glitter' the same "everything in the red"
sound. The album has that ultra-fat, bottom-heavy sound you want it to
have. A con of the raw production is that the vocals are not recorded as
well as they could have been. That's a shame, because singer Sacha van Roij
is a good AOR hardrock singer from the Ronnie James Dio/Chris Cornell school.
And when the rest of the band joins in for some vocal harmonies, that results
in some highlights of the album. Unfortunately, in some
instances Van Roij sings slightly off-key, he occasionally lets his Dutch
accent slip in there, and he regularly overdoes the screaming, just to
force his voice over the wall of sound. All problems that could've easily
been solved with some extra takes. Perhaps the result of a limited
recording budget? One wonders.
So, what we've got is an album with so-so production, by a band that
sometimes sounds too much like 7Zuma7. But wait - it gets worse. On 'Mud
'N' Glitter' there is a cover of the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John
classic, 'You're The One That I Want,' listed under the moniker
'Electrifying,' seemingly placed there for chart-domination purposes only.
Does it matter? Not really, because the song material is strong. And if you
are not a stoner-purist who loathes AOR-influences and extremely catchy
covers of campy soundtrack hits, it's a sure thing you'll be shouting along
with 'Electrifying.' "I've got chills, they're multiplying..."
