"Clement bought a ten-shot .22 Ruger automatic rifle, a regular $87.50 value for $69.95, and a box of .22 longs at K-mart in the Tel-Twelve Mall. He went over to the typewriter counter and asked the girl if he could try one. She said sure and gave him a sheet of notepaper. Clement pecked away for a minute, using his index fingers, pulled the notepaper out of the Smith-Corona and took it with him. He saw a black cowboy hat he liked, put it one and walked out with it . down to a block to Red Bowers Chevrolet where Sandy Stanton was wandering around the used car lot in her high-heel boots and tight jeans." (City Primeval, Elmore Leonard)
The cover of Speedboat FC's Ghetto Stylez suggests a funny - possibly easy tune - record covered with the best and worst of pop history. The title 'Ghetto Stylez' only seems to reinforce this idea. Like so many bands the last years it suggests Speedboat FC wants to ridicule the mainstream black music scene that glorifies the ghetto. Listening to Ghetto Stylez these biases turn out to be wrong. Ghetto Stylez is techno in a Detroit kinda way, big beat like the label Fusebox (TDLC, Binky Boyz) and minimalism (think I-F). It listens like the soundtrack of a movie that is about to be released. A movie like Lost Highway or a novel of Elmore Leonard (Cuba Libre, Get Shorty) put on the screen. His 'City Primeval - High Noon in Detroit' would be perfect for Speedboat FC. It is fast-moving and always full of action. And so is Ghetto Stylez; a deranged observer of the dark side of life that has become ordinary life.
