Second album in a pretty short while from Thomas Brinkman's soulsamplin'guise. He may be one of Germany's most accomplished minimal men -he released on Profan and supplied the bulk of Richie Hawtin's Concept series- but lately he's been robbing the unlimited vaults of soul and funk classics for his Soulcenter* project, proving that he's got a hardly suspected funky bone up his Teutonic ass. This time he has been plundering the honey-in-your-ears sounds of the Stax label sampling the likes of Rufus Thomas, Bar Kays, Eddie Floyd, Herbie Hancock and the Staple Singers -to name only a few- and the endresult is nothing short from absolutely staggering. Opener "Can I ask you" should say it all: an agitatedly preaching male negro voice supported by a hooky and metallic rhythmstructure that further on breaks down into a bluesy female vocal underscored by a rhythm guitar. What he calls it himself I couldn't possibly fathom, but it sure ain't just plain techno or house. And it gets wilder: sometimes a mesh of downbeat and electro ( the equally stunning "What you're doing" ), at times quirky, almost irritatingly minimal techno ( "Psycho Set" ), but always a fresh and original, not to be pigeon-holed blend of (soul)man and machine, with the accent on the rough touch rather than on finished production. If I told you Soulcenter* is Germany's answer to Moodyman, would he consider that a compliment? I know I would. He's got soul and he's Superbad!
