The question that has plagued mankind since the dawn of time has finally
been answered: What would Daffy Duck sound like doing black metal?
Sound kinda ridiculous? Maybe. But to be more accurate, it sounds like Soul of Darkness. Attaching themselves to the "orchestraical black
metal" trend, this outfit from Quebec, Canada gives us what ends up being a
4 song EP plus an intro and outro. The vocalist attempts to be Dani Filth,
but falls way short, and as mentioned above, sounds more like Daffy Duck
than anyone else.
Drumming isn't half bad, and the guitars do provide some pretty
good riffs...when you can hear them inching their way out from behind
the excessive keyboards. Being a person that listens to mostly
underground music, I've become accustomed to albums with sub-par
production, and rarely do I slam a band for having bad production.
However, there is something about this album's prodcution that just
doesn't sit well. This is likely caused by the the waviness of all the
instruments; loud one second, fades to being very quiet, comes back loud,
and again fading into obscurity before coming back strong. This is most
notable while listening to the snare drum and guitar. The only real
consistent sounding instruments on this album are the keyboards, kick drum
and vocals.
What it all comes down to when listening to this album is that it
has been done before (over-done, one might say), and it has been done
much better. Just look to fellow Quebecers Blinded by Faith for
such proof. However, keeping in mind that the music on this album isn't
really all that bad, this band does show some major promise for advancement.
The musical and technical playing skills are clearly present. And given a
couple more years to fully develop, this band just might become another
Cradle of Filth. But boys, drop the main riff to 'Stradh'...trust me!
