Never in the history of metal the expectations of a band's new album where as high as with Slipknot's new
effort called 'Iowa'. Would Slipknot become a so-called sell-out or would the rumors of the band
becoming heavier and heavier be true?
The first time I heard the new album was at the listening party, organized by the Dutch division of
Roadrunner Records at the Melkweg, Amsterdam (Holland), begin August. Besides listening to the new album,
Roadrunner thought they had to have an act that night as sick as the band in question themselves. So
Crazy White Sean did a great job entertaining the curious crowd while eating bugs, hanging heavy weights
on his dick, etc. etc. But hey, we weren't there for Crazy White Sean, we were there to hear the new
Slipknot album.
My first impression of the album was that the band had definitely not become a
sell-out, but had become complexer, heavier and darker. After listening to the album for about ten times
more, I must conclude I was right. 'Iowa' is a beast of an album, complexer and heavier than its
predecessor. The album starts with dark, scary samples, but soon explodes into the Slipknot-anthem
'People=Bullshit'. Although the album in general sounds very heavy, Slipknot didn't forget to bring in
some great melodies, which makes it easy for the trained listener to get into the songs fast. From the
chorus of the 'Heretic Song' ('if you're 555, then I'm 666') to the riffs of 'My Plague', every song is a
statement on itself and is as balanced as scary. Weakest song of the album definitely is 'Left Behind',
although being the first single of the album. There's also a new version of 'Gently' on the album (first
version can be found at independent release 'Mate.feed.kill.repeat', which is a collector's item these
days). The album ends with 'Iowa', a song that is said it was recorded while vocalist Corey Taylor was
standing on broken glass; naked. All in all, the vocals are more honest and interesting than on
Slipknot's debut-album for Roadrunner, drums, percussion and samples are used better and the band has
become sicker and sicker. Slipknot has proven that they're here for the long term, something millions of
people already found out after their eponymous debut. They're here to change not only Iowa, but the whole
(metal)world in which we live in.
