A very special come-together has been generated for Soma's 100th release where the Slam-boys team up with Mo Wax originator James Lavelle's UNKLE-project. Don't know which narcotics they were into when they conceived of it but 'Narcotourists' itself is controlled by a nifty guitarlick, steppin' forward in an anthem style of trippy leftfield effects and subdued oldskool stadiumravesounds proving once and for all that, however deep the waters have been in the past between 4/4 and guitars, these differences rather seem to converge at the beginning of the new millenium. Definitely one for the big festivals! The Slam Mix is directing itself more at the strobey technofloors of this peak-time hungry planet, displaying Meilke and McMillan's eternal penchant for vintage Detroit synths with soft Basic Channel influences again fueled with enough ecstatic breaks to keep the party going on for the next hundred releases. The Unkle Mix engages as a slower and lazier version of the Chemical Brothers but quickly takes a turn into Aphex Twin and Autechre inspired electro-breakbeat territory, the lot being pervaded by delayed guitars, angry and menacing voice-bits and frequent yet unpredictable noise-outbursts. A worthy tribute to a quality label that's grown out to be one of the most reliable and respected purveyors of house and techno on this planet. Cheers, Gentlemen!
