Chocolate tray on the CD-cover aside, there's something wonderfully appealing about Slaid Cleaves' 'Holiday Sampler'. As is often the case during the holiday season, this five-song EP covers a range of human emotions, positive and negative, through the common ground of shared experience. 'Holiday Sampler' kicks off with the tongue-in-cheek romp 'Monster In Law'. Funny and danceable, it's just right for a holiday party. And what would the holidays be without all of that family togetherness? 'November Skies' reflects the peace and bittersweet beauty that come with growing up and accepting the change that life always brings. It weaves childhood memories with adult wisdom into a complex, yet achingly simple, ballad: "Now I know the seasons change and so must I / I've grown to love November skies." But even the oldest among us are still children at heart, something we all get to indulge in during the holiday season, and Cleaves' cover of 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch' is a charming invitation to do just that. The one heart-wrenching song on the EP is 'One Good Year'. It's the New Year's Day plea of a man who has fallen on hard times, the frustration of things continuing not to go right just a little too much to bear. 'Holiday Sampler' is rounded out with 'You Don't Have to Tell Me', a whisper of a song that croons sweet nothings into a lover's ear. Whimsical, soothing, sad, irreverent, Slaid Cleaves presents a sampler of life and wraps it in a bow. Highly recommended.
