Bands like Low, Songs:Ohia and Smog aren't the most cheerful of bands, which doesn't say they're not very nice to listen to. A certain thing that makes you think that you're in a dark room with a few candles accompanied by slow guitar music has a great appeal to many people. That's also something Shipping News tries to do. Only seven songs on their album "Very Soon, And In Pleasant Company" but a total during time of 44 minutes. There's certainly potential for Shipping News to make their music as attractive as the bands mentioned earlier, just listen to "Contents Of A Landfill". But it's a shame that the songs have a big resemblance to each other, causing attention to fade. It's not worth listening to an activated guitarstring, a silence, a drumstick on the skin, a silence and so on. Hopefully on their next album the band will vary a bit more and maybe add something that will make it all less one-sided. "Very Soon, And In Pleasant Company" shows they have it in them. It just has to come out.
