Well folks, it's been 25 years since the Sex Pistols burst on the scene in that halcyon summer of '77, and this Jubilee Commemorative Disc is now available for your purchase. Unfortunately, you have to buy the special walnut and velvet presentation box separately.
Only kidding about the box folks, but seriously: Is there a reason to buy this disc unless you are a collector? Well, yes and no. First of all, if you are a serious fan of popular music, you should already own Never Mind The Bollocks AND The Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle, the sum total of the Pistols' album output. This collection takes a slightly different tack, as it's a chronological collection of their singles, all of which appear on both albums.
So what's new? Well, you get a powerful, live version of Pretty Vacant from the Filthy Lucre Tour of 1996. Plus you get the promo videos of God Save The Queen, Anarchy In The UK, and Pretty Vacant. Also, you get a great cover photo of the Queen's Guard, with one member passed out from heat exhaustion.
Is it worth it? I dunno. It would have been nice to have a few more live cuts, but the Pistols were always about giving the crowd less than they should have. So it's entirely in keeping with their philosophy. It's certainly worth it to introduce a young person to a band that totally destroyed the caste system of rock, with a little help from a little band called The Ramones. The music is still as forceful today as ever and is a clarion call to people who demand passion and anarchy from their music. But if you're new to the music, do yourself a favour and spend the money on the two official albums. Those are six sides of music that hold together as a whole even today. And if you have a bit of dosh left over, go for it.
Oh yeah, Steve Jones will thank you from the bottom of his Hollywood Hills villa. John Lydon will probably just call you a stupid wanker.
