There aren't many bands from Asia that are known over here. Okay, we had hardrock-crew Loudness (Japan) and symphonic metalband Concerto Moon, but I can't mention more bands that are from Asia. So what secrets do the East keep for us? When I got the request from his fanclub to write a review about the new album of Korean Seo Taiji, I became very curious. Especially when I heard this guy's music can be compared to bands like Deftones, Korn and Incubus, three of my favorite bands. Well, before I tell you any further about this album, let me introduce you to Seo Taiji. This man has been musically active since 1986. After having joined several metal bands (e.g. Sinawe), in 1991 he started Seo Taiji & Boys. They released several albums, but a few years later Seo Taiji decided to go solo. Meanwhile he had earned a cult-status in Korea, but in Europe and the USA he was totally unknown. After a five-year stay in the USA, in 2000 Seo Taiji returned to his home country, Korea. His latest achievement is this 'Ultramania'. Seo Taiji has always been interested in mixing different styles, from techno and rap to funk, but always keeping metal as a basis. So especially after his stay in the USA (where he made acquaintance with nu- metal), it isn't strange that his latest effort 'Ultramania' is a typical nu-metal album. Influences of Korn and 311 (on 'Ultramania') are rather obvious. The songs have good song structures and nice melodies. Some songs even sound rather original (e.g. 'Do you remember'), but overall it's just that typical nu- metal album. Perhaps the nicest thing of the album is the fact that Seo Taiji's singing mostly is in the Korean language. Fortunately, a lyric sheet with translations in English was enclosed, otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell you that the best songs of the album are 'Orange', 'Metropolis' and 'Ultramania'. Seo Taiji composed, arranged and produced the album; he did it all by himself, which is only commendable. I can only say: Shu-po cho-ul-tra-ma-ni-a!
