Since Sentenced's 1991 debut album Shadows Of The Past, the sound of this band has evolved from pure death metal to melodic gothic rock. The latest step in this evolution is The Cold White Light. This is the seventh album (not counting EPs and compilation Greatest Kills) by "The Northernmost Killers," as this Finnish quintet have (lamely - ed.) nicknamed themselves.
The first thing one notices about this album is the cover: The characteristic band logo has been replaced by a simple, standard word processing font (probably Times New Roman). The only thing that remains of the original logo is the capital S. This change raises some suspicion: Could it be that another great band has succumbed to the temptations of commercialism? Has Sentenced, like too many others, turned into a poppy rip-off of themselves, trying to make some big bucks? Fortunately, these questions can be answered with a big "No!"
After the haunting instrumental Konevitsan Kirkonkellot (a Finnish traditional), the listener is treated to another ten songs, each as dark, depressed, and frustrated as we're used to from these Finns. But then again, what else could we expect, considering song titles such as Cross My Heart And Hope To Die, Blood And Tears, and Excuse Me While I Kill Myself. :o)
While the overall pace on The Cold White Light is somewhat slower in comparison to its predecessor Crimson (1999), it never becomes boring because of the strong melody lines and a few up-tempo songs strategically placed in-between (something which Crimson unfortunately lacked). Basically, this album is a definite must-buy for anyone who's into bands like Tiamat and HIM. But also, if you like catchy, melodic goth rock/metal with highly melancholic (and sometimes slightly disturbing) lyrics, you won't be disappointed by The Cold White Light. It's quite safe to say that this is one of the highlights of 2002.
