While listening to this CD and looking at its cover photos, I couldn't help thinking about a description in this month's Q magazine rock jargon glossary. "Shoegazing: dreamy, effects-laden stuff with lyrics about polar ice caps . . . " Indeed, that's Sciflyer.
Melt is Sciflyer's second CD and was recorded at home in Alameda, California, on an '80s eight-track machine. The overall feeling is lo-fi (although the liner notes announce "welcome to mid-fi!"), with booming voices mixed to the back. The opener track, 'Slowfire,' has the most interesting approach: a nice mixture of guitar soundscapes and psychedelic pop. 'Studio Audience,' the middle track, suffers from its endless groove, and gets boring. The last track is a scamp cover of the Hüsker Dü song 'Powerline.' I wouldn't call this a fantastic CD, but My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive fans will probably get their kicks out of this release.
