Look out for this one. Be aware of the consequences it might have. It could affect your life, just as it did mine. Savoy Grand are a devastating experience. They leave you numb. Sitting in a corner of your candlelit room, you let your mind wander around in the darkest neighbourhoods of your most painful experiences. You relive them again. Still you long for more. No turning back.
And all of this because of an English quartet that make quiet music. Very quiet, but not at all dreamy. Savoy Grand's music is difficult to describe. Recently I heard someone say "slowcore made by Brits," which is, in fact, not a bad explanation of what Savoy Grand are trying to achieve. A clear and lucid voice, a sparse guitar, very minimalist percussion, some bass, a little bit of organ, and vibes. That's all there is. And that's all one is able to take. In their own quiet way, Savoy Grand are a demanding and confronting band - which is probably unintentional. The atmosphere in literally all songs on Burn The Furniture is so immensely melancholic and sad, the tears automatically appear in the corners of your eyes. And believe me, you'll not be able to stop them. A reference, you ask? A minimalist Sophia without the self-pity. Nick Drake on downers with a sombre Mogwai as his backing band. Slint and Mark Hollis jamming together after the funeral of a mutual friend.
No. I shouldn't do this. Savoy Grand's soundtrack of the most painful moments in anyone's life is simply unprecedented. A minimalist melancholic nightmare of which it is impossible to wake up from. Not that you would want to. Burn The Furniture is more addictive than crack cocaine. The voice leads you inside. The guitar and bass grab a hold of your extremities. The drums and vibes are the robes that bind it all together. The organ is the necessary anaesthetic, because when the painfully sad trumpet falls in, every hope of recovery is lost. Losing control never was this beautiful. Just let go.
