NINE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SALAKO:
1. The band hail from the Northern English city of Hull. It's rather cold and dreary there. Salako aren't.
2. In the 20 months since they released their first single, they've unleashed over 60 songs onto an unsuspecting world. It would seem they're quite prolific.
3. They're on Jeepster, home of Belle and Sebastian, Looper, the Gentle Waves, and Snow Patrol. The folks at Jeepster have quite good taste.
4. Most of Salako's songs were recorded in band member Luke's bedroom (save the odd bits put to tape on the beach and at the newsagents). Studios: "A nightmare, total waste of time."
5. Guitarist Dave Langdale recently left the band. Now Salako are a leaner, meaner, and quite trim three-piece.
6. Last year, the band set off on a new project: to release a quartet of EPs over a 12-month-period - all named after places and the dates at which the cover photos were taken. First up was 'Mappleton Sands 201298 EP', featuring six tracks of folk-flavoured psychedelia.
7. 'Ventimiglia 120899 EP' is number two in the series, and it's named after an Italian town that guitarist James visited on holiday last year.
8. There are five tracks on this stunningly varied record. 'Hull City Tiger' was named after the horse owned by Pavement percussionist Bob Nastanovich. 'The Queen's Got A Price On My Life' concerns "a bee that's got hayfever so it can't collect pollen, so the queen's after its life. But it's not really about bees. They're metaphorical bees." Indeed.
9. Salako make intelligent, quirky, and maddeningly fine pop music. 'Ventimiglia 120899 EP' is available at all good record shops now. Go listen...
