Much like Nick Drake or Richard Buckner, Adam Klein withdraws into his own private hell. Adam Klein is the gorgeous voice behind Roman Evening. Adam Klein sings of love and hate. He sings his songs of life and death. Roman Evening brings the music to its absolute minimum, which doesn’t automatically means that they don’t make plenty room for trumpets, synthesizers, samples and pedal steel. Together Now is an exceptional and moody album. You’ll have to be patient if you want to understand what is going here, because this is the kind of spooky music that grows slowly. The sadness and surrounding darkness on Roman Evening’s promising debut is a bit like a light weighted Souled American and it often reminds me of a better Sparklehorse and the intimateness of folkies like Richard Buckner in some ways, but Together Now has that unique sound and Roman Evening doesn’t leave many traces of influences behind, except from its American heritage. This is a great record for late-evenings when it’s cold and raining.
