Nathan Amundson is a desperate man. That is, if the sounds he produces are silent outbursts of his own state of mind. The man debuted earlier this year under the name Rivulets with a self-titled album, on Low's Chairkicker's Union label, and sounded like desolate Nick Drake singing over a bunch of Low songs played by Mark Kozelek of the Red House Painters. Absolutely brilliant album. Now Amundson — he is Rivulets — returns with a four-track EP, recorded live for a radio show in Reykjavik, Iceland. The geography seems to have had a distinct effect on his performance, because the four songs — all present on the debut album, as well — sound even more desperate and desolate, and I didn't think that was possible. The man, with his acoustic guitar, plays and sings as intensely possible, in a very minimalistic way, and the sparsity and fragility provide extra added value to the beautiful songs, with the rearranged 'Stead' as best moment. Thank you, Rivulets.
