With the blessing of Low. That's the conclusion we can draw when Low's Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker make contributions and when Alan records and mixes the album. To make the story complete, the album is released on Low's brand-new label Chair Kickers Union. Furthermore, Rivulets seems to be a one-man project of Nathan Amundson, who sings, drums, plays the guitar, optigan. and piano, and writes all of the music and lyrics. It becomes crystal-clear that Nathan is a very talented guy, because in all aspects he touches the right tone: His vocals are warm and melodic like Nick Drake, his instrumentation is tasteful and to the point, and his superb compositoric skills are obvious from the first note on. As can be aspected when releasing an album with the assistance of Low, the music is quiet and melancholic, but also direct in a non-intrusive manner. Not unlike Low or Nick Drake, but it has to be said that Rivulets isn't far at all from the enormous qualities that the Duluth trio have displayed over the years. More than once Nathan hits exactly the right button in terms of beautiful acoustic songs put in a plaintive atmosphere, and - just like Low sometimes do - he adds drony ambient keyboard parts underneath the songs. Combined with the perfect, deep sound, Rivulets made an album that leaves you mesmerized, longing for more. A silent suprise.
