Having all previous Ridge releases in the house I rarely spent time
spinning them. The 1999 release 'Le Rodeo '69' is an exception. This three
track single buries variety and captures a powerful lust for playing their
favorite music. I was surprised to find a ten song full lenght in my
mailbox at this point in the band's career. Ridge mixes Kyuss-like
open-tuned, blues like guitar riffs with Fu Manchu styled non-melodic
vocals. In songs like opener 'Afro' and the experimental 'Como Un Toro' this
odd combination works, but mainly towards the end of the album it starts to
feel really unnatural. "Groovy stonerrock songs with a sound that is among
the coolest and most fuzzy ever heard" screams the sleeve of this promo.
Commercial B.S. Yes, the songs are sometimes groovy, but not always
because drummer Johan Olsson has a seriously stiff beat going on throughout
most of the slower songs. And no, the sound is not the coolest and most
fuzzy around. The bassdrum does not kick in like a baseball bat would on
Osama bin Laden and the guitarsound is rather thin. That's because of all
that fuzz on the guitars. The big trick with using effects is to use them
suggestively, not overwhelming. You will loose the addition that effects
can make and give it a keyrole in the overall sound, which is easy and
predictable and boring. Whatever, back to the product and to the Big
Question: what does this record say? Not much. It shows that the five
Swedes have made little progress in the two years since the 'Rodeo '69'
single and that Ridge still is a very decent EP band. My attention starts
to decrease after four of five songs. Ridge's music and performance is not
bad, but I wouldn't spent the full CD price on this record. Because after
hearing 'A Countrydelic And Fuzzed Experience In A Colombian Supremo', it
goes without saying that it is still a bit to early for Ridge to put out a
full lenght record. Listen to the track 'Fuelle' to see that quote confirmed.
(editor's note: according to their website Ridge has called it quits, because they were sick of being accused of "being the worst Fu Manchu rip-off band ever alive")
