The third solo album of the Australian Richard Davies. Originally Davies played with the Moles, a post-punk band that espoused an eclectic brand of art-pop. Although they didn't exist long (1989-92), they garnered praise form the British and American press. Going solo, Davies started to concentrate more on the song. At the moment, he has established a reputation as an origianal and talented songwriter, and his new album 'Barbarians' proves that this is right. The songs on the album, recorded over four days in September 1999, are strong and consistent. 'Barbarians' drifts on in a very decent and mature way, and it is hard to find a bad moment on it. But maybe that's the only thing missing: an acceleration or a little more excitement. However, there is still space for the more uptempo 'Great Republic' and a funny country-like intermezzo 'The Kiss-Off'. The most catchiest tunes on the album, 'Palo Alto' and 'Stars', really reach for the gallery of best singer/songwriter songs. 'Barbarians' is most confortable when you're lying under the sheets, listening away to the melodies and the high-quality guitar playing. And when the album is finished you can close your eyes with a smile on your face.
