Be careful - the rest of the album sounds much better than the repetitive electronic noise that is the first track. So, when you skip to the second track, no harm will be done. The reason I bring this up is that this really is a gem of a record, and it would be quite a shame if people were scared off by that first track. Re:, consisting of Ian Ilavsky (one half of Constellation Records and musician in Sofa, Sackville, and A Silver Mt. Zion) and Aden Stevens, have produced a cut & paste record, filled with samples, field recordings, and pieces of music, all assembled between 1997 and 2000. As always, Constellation doesn't provide instant gratification, but for people who are willing to put some effort into it, their records always deliver. As does Re:. It's Constellation's most electronic sounding album to date, but there are rarely any similarities with other electronic acts. Only in 'Solute', a beautiful gloomy ambient track in the beginning, but expanding with distorted beats completely taking over the song, one can hear references to Faultline (project of David Kosten, also producer of Ben Christophers). But that's definitely not a bad thing. The album is full of drones, loops, bleeps, and screeches, but just when you think it could use something else as well, there's a dreamy acoustic guitar coming in, in the song 'Straint'. Very welcome indeed, and a great addition in between those sometimes harsh electronic sounds. 'Buke' then suprises with a guitar theme in typical Constellation style, which means dark, serene, and moving. And that dark and moving atmosphere is present on the whole album, no matter how far Re: explore the possibilities of sonic manipulation. It gives the album a human and organic touch, and it also makes it a lot more accessible than other, more puristic electronica artists. Another great release on a great label.
