They've been putting something in the water up there in Scandinavia. Some dark and mysterious power seems to have taken over, indelibly stamping wonderful and wonderfully silly little pop melodies into our subconscious. Ray Wonder hail from Umeå in the north of Sweden. The band - originally intended merely as a side project - is comprised of various ex-members of Puffin, Shredhead, and Komeda. Having seen the band play LA in 1998, none other than Beck Hansen claimed that their show was one of the best performances he'd seen in many years, so it's not much of a surprise that Ray Wonder got the call to open up for Beck at recent shows in Glasgow and Manchester. This, their third album, opens with the chugging power chords of 'Mistreated', with singer Henrik Andersson extolling that he has indeed found "a new kind of love" (hence the album title 'A New Kind of Love'). Swiftly followed by singles one and two, the infectiously catchy and hooky 'We Got to Be Good to Each Other' and the stomping 'Break It Down', this is a remarkably well-produced and wonderful Pop (with a capital P) record. Yes, you could compare Ray Wonder to many bands - Supergrass, the Kinks, and the Monkees come to mind - but what they do is classy and doesn't deserve cheap comparisons. Soaring strings, Muppet-like backing vocals, and twitchy keyboard lines make 'A New Kind of Love' a curiously quirky and solid record. Buy this album now, and you'll be able to tell your friends that you liked them "before they were big." It's only a matter of time...
