Randy is a fourpiece from Sweden that gained attention with their last album The Human Atom Bombs. That album earned them a support slot for the Hives on their UK tour. Which isn't entirely strange because of the good mixture of old-style punk and freaked-out rock 'n' roll the album provides.
On the new EP Cheater, Randy concentrates more on nice, finished, and almost poppy punk songs instead of the craziness, raw power, and experimental punk that characterized some of the songs on The Human Atom Bombs. That's maybe why it's not weird that one of the most straightforward punk songs on their last album, Addicts Of Communication, is also featured on this six-song EP.
Cheater gives the listener three previous unreleased songs: Cheater, I Don't Wanna Work, and Stepping Out, of which the last one is also the best on this EP. The other two, Dynamite and I Won't Play That Song, were taken from the CD single I Don't Need Love.
Overall, Randy plays high-quality punk rock that doesn't lean on the American power punk of Pennywise or Bad Religion, but has its roots more in European punk and rock 'n' roll (like The Clash, The Hives, Gluecifer, and even the Sex Pistols). Cheater provides six, well-worked-out punk songs, but lacks the craziness and experiments that made The Human Atom Bombs so interesting; therefore, the EP becomes a bit bland. And six punk songs on one CD (of which only three are previously unreleased) doesn't really outgrow the single status. Burning Heart is currently in the process of re-releasing Randy's first, self-released album (You Can't Keep A Good Band Down) which was previously unavailable. Maybe they could have enclosed these songs as a bonus.
