Raging Slab were scheduled to take the plane for a European tour on september 11th. When after some rescheduling they made another attempt to leave, the airline told them their tickets were no longer valid and they had to cancel the tour. This is about typical of Raging Slab's career. Greg Strzempka, Elyse Steinman and Alec Morton have toured with the likes of The Ramones, Alice In Chains and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, worked with producers like Michael Beinhorn and Brendan O'Brien and gotten rave reviews, but they also have had several albums rejected by major labels and used up more drummers than Spinal Tap. (for 'The Dealer' they used 3 of them.) Maybe some redneck from Louisiana put a voodoo curse on them, because he couldn't stomach that these Yanks make the best southern-fried boogie-rock on the planet. Which they once again prove on 'The Dealer', which they started working on in 1999, but couldn't release until this year because they had to wait out their contract with American Recordings. 'Sir Lord Ford / When Electricity Came To Arkansas', 'Flap Your Boogie Flap', 'That's Alright' and 'Bite The Lightning' show noone can play punked-up, raw as hell boogie like Raging Slab. Not only knows this band how to boogie, Strzempka is an excellent singer too. And it be a good thing if current drummer Rob Cournoyer would stay with the band for a while, for he knows how essential the cowbell is in this type music. Like his colleagues, whether in used cars or in drugs, this dealer has his dark side too. There are a lot of average songs on 'The Dealer' besides the standouts mentioned above. The overall balance is still positive, but it maybe would have been better to leave off a few of the 16 tracks.
