Radar Brothers only have one song, but Christ: When it's this good, who's complaining? Delicate guitar lines, subtle and oftentimes melancholy-tinged harmonies coated in muted exuberance, And The Surrounding Mountains is the perfect record for lazy, sweltering summer evenings. Occasionally reminiscent of The Flaming Lips' and Grandaddy's more introspective moments, this is a Dave Fridmann album in all but name. Produced by head Brother Jim Putnam (who also founded the band, sings, and even did the artwork), these twelve songs all find themselves firmly ensconced in the languid, leisurely mid-pace tempo. This Xmas Eve is pure Daryll-Ann, in their slightly off-kilter, Byrdsian style, while Rock Of The Lake could have been a leftover from Jim O'Rourke's Insignificance album. The only fault with this record is that it plods on a bit too much at times, harkening back to Pink Floyd's Meddle phase. Still, this is intelligent and well-crafted music by a band still only on their third record. Hopefully And The Surrounding Mountains is a shade of things to come.
