Wonder boys Toni Little and Mike.TV. won Netherland's prestigious Grand Prize award ("Grote Prijs van Nederland") for dance, back in 2000. That was soon followed by The Pooh EP, which broke musically from their former, more experimental work. Young Urban Professionals is a new step in Quick & Brite's evolution — strangely enough, accomplished by taking one step forward and two steps back. At the same time. On one hand, Young Urban Professionals is rooted firmly in the early eighties and nineties; on the other hand, 2-step and modern electro influences are the basis of Quick & Brite's new sound — a sometimes strange, but astonishing, sound. Like opener Break Even: it has a break that suggests groovy 2-step, but is, in fact, a steamy electro track with Kraftwerk-like synth lines and a pumping rhythm. But European electro influences are also dominant. First single Taking Care Of Business, for example, is a New Order dancefloor killer with deep bass and waves of dark melodies. And there are more influences, like rave, italo house, Electronic Body Music (Pooh! Pooh!), ambient, and intelligent techno (Creating Waves, Jip). But most notable tracks are: Urban Exploration, which is a funky excursion into steamy 2-step resulting in a 2-step/electro crossover; the big beat electro track Golf Cart Race; and the two parts of Hobby Deluxe that clearly are an eighties European disco-electro homage. Although I loved the earlier experimental, dark techno, and drum 'n' bass material, I have to admit that Young Urban Professionals is Quick & Brite's most mature album, combining so many different elements into a tasteful and groove-electro blend. Please make sure to check out their new video clip, directed by Sandder (who also directed the infamous Bastian video), on their web site.
