Free improvisation by a string quartet. A description that captivates my attention right away, because I love improvisation and I love string quartets. But, everything goes differently this time. Emanem doesn't release only fantastic albums; a fact that becomes clear after listening to Angel Gate from Quatuor Accorde. For most of their recordings many good things can be said, intriguing atmospheres can be described, and an ongoing feeling of fascination can be felt. But not this time. This string quartet isn't able to grab me by the balls, ears, brains, heart, or whatever. This is improvisation made only to improvise, to show off on their instruments. Beauty wasn't their goal. Tension and atmospheric qualities are nowhere to be heard. It just doesn't hit you, it doesn't appeal to any feeling other than boredom and annoyance. And that can't be the target of Quatuor Accorde. Why it worked out this way, I don't know; but the fact is that it is obvious they could have done much better, one way or another. A missed chance.
