Quasi are Portland-based duo Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. Formerly married, luckily for us the pair chose to continue making music together. 'The Sword of God' is their fourth full-length album, and it's both a mover and a shaker. Weiss also works the drums in all-grrl group Sleater-Kinney, while Coomes performed duties as bass player for Heatmiser, best known as Elliott Smith's old band. In fact, Quasi occasionally act as Mr. Smith's backing combo while on the road. Enough details... Let's get to the music. The 14 songs that comprise 'The Sword of God' are a solid collection of rough-hewn pop gems. Often bathed in sheer awkward beauty and occasionally a tad too atonal, the listener needs to polish the rough edges, revealing the ever-so-slightly hidden prize inside, much like a box of Cracker Jack. Songs such as 'It's Raining' and 'Genetic Science' worm their way into your head after a session or two. ' A Case of No Way Out' is the sound of pure longing, while 'The Curse of Having It All' even recalls (Believe it!) a Yank-infused, stripped-down Belle & Sebastian. This is powerpop at its finest. Think Ben Folds on Benzedrine. Think the aforementioned Elliott Smith after his testicles have finally dropped.
