Twenty years ago punk was still punk. Twenty-one years ago, Purrkur Pillnikk was founded in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. In a truly punk fashion, their motto was: "It only matters what you DO, not what you are capable of doing." PP was certainly not capable of playing a guitar or any other instrument properly. So what did they do? They played some instruments and recorded some songs. Big deal? Don't practice too much, and record your songs as soon as possible. And that was about three weeks after their first gig (or was it a rehearsal?). Again, a few weeks later PP's first EP, Tilf, was released. Within one-and-a-half years, they released a few EPs and two LPs. Then in 1983, they split. One member of Purrkur Pillnikk went on to form Kukl, and later the Sugarcubes (Einar Örn), where another member joined him later on (Bragi); the third became a writer; and the fourth a ballet dancer.
Why am I telling you this short interruption in the Icelandian music history? Simply because the collected works of Purrkur Pillnikk have just been released on a double CD called Í Augum Úti. So, should you listen to this record because you need to familiarize yourself with the roots of all these 1990s and 2000s punk bands? Not really, because I doubt it was PP who influenced them. But why then? Well, maybe because you just happen to like the kinda chaotic punk they used to make in the early 1980s. Or because you were a big fan of PP, but sold their EPs and LPs in a garage sale.
