POB, aka Paul Brodgen, one of the UK’s less commercial trance producers, turns in an album of dark beats and moody feel. The Essence is definitely not your run-of-the-mill formulaic trance crap churned out by scores of wannabe producers. Rather, it is an album of careful mood manipulation and astute production sense. Tracks such as “Luna” and “Situation” attest to this, and Brodgen skillfully controls sound in an expressive, yet never overwrought manner. “Ze Booth” is a delightful electro-tinged tune full of rough beats and a backed by a winding bassline. The song shifts midway, rendering it somewhat more dramatic and deserving of listeners who will listen carefully to the subtle changes. “Flip Ya” is similarly enjoyable, with its retro synth work and bouncy, robotic feel—kind of goofy, but unabashedly fun nevertheless. With his records turning up in the boxes of Sasha, Digweed, and Nick Warren, Brodgen is making quite a name for himself in trance. A sure bet for fans of the sound, and those looking for a break from cheesy, fluffy trance-lite fodder littering record stores.
