"The music was crap", snarled Prolapse with considerable venom on their classic track about the 1980s, 'Deanshanger'. This was of course before master necromancers such as Daft Punk and Ladytron came on the scene. They put a new slant on the cheesy soulless disco-pop of the 80s, breathing fresh life into a dead genre. Euro-popsters plexiq pull no such trick, opting instead to faithfully reproduce the sounds of the 80s with none of the formers' inventiveness. So on the appropriately named 'failure', we get a repetitive bassline played over a beat circa Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation'. The rather anodyne 'bird' finds the band sounding like a diluted cross between Nik Kershaw and Japan, whilst album opener 'tic tic' scores marginally more success by coming across like Depeche Mode's slightly moody younger brother. plexiq's clock has clearly stopped ticking for some length of time - 'black box recorder' sounds unfeasibly like the soundtrack to 'War of the Worlds' - so much so I kept expecting David Essex to leap out of the speakers at any moment, crying "No, Nathaniel, no!" But it's not just an 80s timewarp in plexiq's world - 'criminal arts' sees the band embark on a fundamental change in direction by introducing - yes - guitars! The ensuing indie-rock stodge sounds so generic it makes Feeder seem groundbreaking. There are a distinct lack of contours on plexiq's map, which accounts for why it comes across so terribly flat and underachieving, right down to the irritating absence of capital letters in the band's name and song titles. The final three minutes of the album feature band members dithering about what sort of sandwich they should order from an American diner. It's encouraging at least to hear it's not just plexiq's music that lacks direction and purpose, it also appears to be the story of their lives.
