"Double Figure", the follow-up to Plaid's stunning 1999 album, "Rest Proof Clockwork", I'm sorry to say, fails to deliver. That is to say, had another artist put out an album like this, it'd be acceptable, quite good, even. We've come to expect more from our electronica demigods Ed 'n' Andy, however. Unlike its predecessor (last year's "Trainer" was a reissue of older material), "Double Figure" contains no canonic tracks, no music that makes you feel as if it's always been there and no melodies worth remembering. The album is crammed (it contains as much as 19 tracks) with what is essentially filler material: you'll find mostly rather sketchy bleeps and unconvincing beatfoolery in the worst Warp tradition. Granted, the first three tracks are pretty good, if you have no problem with kitschy 80s synths (I don't), but from then on it's all downhill. Hopefully, Plaid will get their act together again for their next release, but this, I'm sorry to say, is a fairly average electronica album worth buying only if you're a completist.
