The likelihood of this latest release by riotboy Panacea ever breaking any charts is questionable. Truth is, Chartbreaka is a very loud teaser for his upcoming fifth full-length release, Underground Superstardom. Influenced by other Mille Plateaux acts, Panacea got involved with the clicks 'n' cuts scene more and more. Collaborations with DJ Spooky and Dälek were successful. His passion for drum 'n' bass, however, remained. Chartbreaka is back to the roots of breakbeat. And that means fast, sometimes hectic breakbeat with lots of deep and distorted bass lines and opportunistic rave techno. Drum 'n' bass as it should sound on the dance floor. As London-based DJ Scud shows in his remix of King Of The Jungle. Chartbreaka is old-school drum 'n' bass. Far from innovative but very enjoyable. Let's hope his upcoming album, Underground Superstardom, has more to offer. Panacea's first two albums and his brilliant 12-inch Anti-Funk show that this German wonder kid is capable of making some real groundbreaking breakbeat that lifts the whole genre a level higher. Without being negative, Chartbreaka is drum 'n' bass at it lowest level. A dazzling 1995 sound that still works on the dance floor, or boosts very well from the sound system of your Opel Manta A. But pushing drum 'n' bass in new directions is a completely different story.
