Difficult one, this Paloma. Compared to previous work by this French band led by Laurent Vaissiere (who wrote all of the material), Actresses Date Actors is less folk/country and more guitars. But, on the other hand, the production is better and therefore maybe has lost some of its intimacy. Nevertheless, Actresses Date Actors is a fairly good record, full of American rock with a psychedelic sauce. American, because Paloma sound like Silver Jews in a good studio, like the later Guided By Voices, or - at moments - like Led Zeppelin jamming together with Pink Floyd in a Baton Rouge club. The Head's Up Saloon, for instance, is an all-time classic, combining lazy, slow drums, whispered vocals, acoustic guitar, and lightly-distorted electric guitars. But, at other moments, some tracks are just too superficial, because they lack tension, lack the feeling that you almost can inhale the music, a feeling that is so crucial for Paloma's music. Actresses Date Actors has its moments, but in the end just can't grab your attention all the way.
