The new full-length CD of Old school 101 is out and it's called 'Pura Vida'(pure life). It's their second album and both of them are released on Victory records. All of the band members have been playing music since the mid 80's so they know a lot about the scene through the years. I was quite curious about this new album because I heard a lot of different opinions about the record. I first heard of the band OS101 on the 'Victory style III' compilation. After hearing the song '315' I had to have the full album called 'United Brotherhood Of Scenesters'. The General Counsel of Notre Dame University forced them to change the album cover with the fighting Irish leprechaun on front, because it's the trademark of the University. Either way it's a very good album with nice songs on it, but none of the songs had the same impact on me as 315. Listening to this record I can say that there are no spectacular changes in the music OS101 plays. They are still making hardcore-punk in the vein of Vision and Seven Seconds. It's not a sound that's new or original but I always like to hear bands like these. The album starts with a 30-second sound check intro and then it bursts loose with fast and energetic tunes on the first song 'What Tomorrow Brings'. Personally I think this is the best song on the record. The second song is 'Rich Kids' which is about stealing someone's girlfriend. The next one is about their hometown New Jersey and is called 'Ballad Of New Jersey'. Then we get the song 'Spam In A Can'. With a little help from the horn section of labelmates Catch 22 this turns out to be a nice song as well. There's also a video coming out for this song. After that you'll get 'Colorforms'. It's about being real to yourself and what it all means to you. The most fun song on the record is called Pizzacore and it's about singing to your pizza (who doesn't?!). Track number eight is called 'Punchline' and it's the slowest song on the record and it even sounds a bit poppy to me. But I kinda liked it and I guess it fits right in with the rest of the songs. 'No Clue' is about people who think they know what hardcore means to singer Skip Skool. The song 'Parasite' is a song that's shorter than a minute and about people who are always talking shit and are never real. Then we get to the title track 'Pura Vida'. The song 'Pura Vida' is about memories and about life in general. Just like the first album 'Pura Vida' ends with an instrumental song. The song takes nearly 9 minutes so I guess you'll only listen to it once or twice. Even though this record is just a little bit softer than you might expect from a hardcore band, it's pretty much what I expected it would be and that's positive and melodic hardcore-punk played with a lot of passion and a lot of fun. If you like 'Brotherhood Of Scenesters' or if you're looking for catchy and melodic hardcore-punk I can assure you 'Pura Vida' is a record for you!
