Three years ago, Orishas gave the world A Lo Cubano ("The Cuban Way"). Cuban son and salsa were cut up with beefy hip-hop beats and ferocious raps in Spanish, which turned out to be a great combination. The Paris-based band has since traveled the world, playing just about every major festival and performing over 200 concerts. The crowds were pleased, but in the meantime, no new material was released. Finally, in August 2001, the band went into the studio to start recording Emigrante. Musically speaking, not a lot has changed since A Lo Cubano, but it is not a problem at all. The Cuban threesome happily spit out their lyrics over delicious Latin-American rhythms, talking about serious stuff in songs like Emigrantes, and Desaparecidos, or about more lightweight matters, as in Guajiro (an indigenous people living in several areas of the South American continent) and 300 Kilos. But if you don't understand Spanish, such things are of no importance: Emigrante is filled with full-on party music, and it is no surprise at all that Orishas will be performing the big summer festivals once again.
